1. The English Language and Composition AP III course is a demanding and rewarding experience. To prepare for the course – we must be familiar with the Terms and Devices used in discussion. Therefore, part of your summer assignment is to define each term on the list below. Own these Terms and Devices before you enter the formal class beginning in August 2015. Give an example of each term – highlight the example. We will begin the class with a complete review of the Terms and Devices. AP III is an American Literature and Language experience with an emphasis on nonfiction works.

Realism; Naturalism; Modernism; Rationalism; Romanticism; Transcendentalism
· Complete a Major Works Data Sheet (MWDS) for the novel. Works that have obviously come from the use of Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, or anybody else’s notes will receive a ZERO. Below is a site where you will find a copy of a MWDS.

· Go to the Ayn Rand website (aynrand.org) and pick ONE of the essay prompts
The essay has two documents Due September 11, 2015:
Draft – with self edit obvious (Include any notes you use) and a Final clean and corrected draft
· Choose one character and be prepared to create an in-depth character analysis – we will learn about this when class begins.
o Due August 24, 2015 (or the 25th, whichever day AP III classes will meet.)
FAILURE TO TURN THESE ITEMS IN ON THEIR DUE DATE AS ASSIGNED WILL RESULT IN YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE COURSE!

- Read A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway or Nature and Other Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson, or find another work of American literature and read it. (This IS NOT mandatory, but it is highly recommended!) The more prepared you are for this class, the better off you are going to be! Read The Hunger Games or some other work of popular fiction or nonfiction. The point is to continue reading!
