AP IV 2015 MANDATORY Summer Assignment Mrs. Holmes
The English Literature and Composition AP IV course is a demanding and rewarding experience. Our time will be spent on reading and interpreting what we read. We will continue to use the terms and devices (including but not limited to: the “general knowledge” terms and devices and Higher level terms and devices: The Elements of Voice, ad hominem, reduction ad absurdum, polysyndeton, synecdoche, metonymy, etc.) during the course. The MWDS is still used in the AP IV experience. AP IV is a world literature course, with a strong emphasis on the British Tradition.
A) Read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
· PLEASE check your email every Thursday starting June 11th, as I will be sending a guide for the reading assignment and where and when to post your responses to the scheduled reading.
o This assignment replaces the MWDS.
· Go to the Ayn Rand website (aynrand.org) and pick ONE of the essay prompts – complete the essay.
This essay assignment requires two documents
1. Draft – with self-editing evident
2. Final clean copy (include any notes you use)
· Pick one character and be prepared to write a complete character analysis on the first day of class 2015!
B) Purchase and Read: How to Read Literature Like a Professor
By: Thomas C. Foster
ISBN: 978-0-06-230167-3
· Read and annotate the preface, the introduction and chapter 1. The remainder of the book will be read and annotated as we continue through class for the 2015-2016 school year. See the link below for instructions on how to annotate from AP Central!
** Be prepared to discuss on the first day of class!!
